Hi,

I recently subscribed to this forum and this is my first post here.

I am from an engineering background working for a leading IT consulting firm in US for the past few years.
I have recently developed interest in Finace domain and am in the process of exporing options to switch from IT consulting into Finance industry.
I have started few classes in accouting and am targeting to take the CFA 1 exam soon.

Could somebody from this experienced forum help me understad if this is a tried and tested approach for somebody who wants to shift from IT into Finance?

Thanks

I'm sure it will work out nicely but there are other ways to switch industries where you will run a lesser risk of failure: you should know that only a smaller percentage of those who set out to take the charter ever succeed in doing so, the failure degree for the FIRST level alone is about 60% and that is among those who show up for the exam as there are people who sign up but never go there in the end. If you sense you might not stick it out until the bitter end (three years from now or more) then a shorter examination or other training might work better in order for you to achieve your aim. There is a huge difference in workload between taking a few classes in accounting, and setting out to become a CFA charterholder.

If you want to switch career paths in 3 years or more, take the CFA. Otherwise I would say get your MBA part time or the series 7, CFP. The main thing is trying to learn everything you can about the profession, trying to network and being a people person. This business when it comes down to it is all about who you know.
